OUR PARISH ORIGINS

Our church origins can be traced back to 1978, here a group of 20 faithful got together and proceeded to take out a loan of $48,000 to purchase what was formally a Presbyterian Church, located in Homebush.

Work commenced to renovate the church and to build the iconostasis.  Icons were donated, by the parishioners as well as all other necessities, the ladies auxiliary not only helped to raise monies but sewed all the vestments.

In 2011, a canonical transfer took place and the parish joined the Serbian Orthodox Metropolitantate of Australia and New Zealand diocese.

Today, our Holy Archangel Michael's Parish is renowned for its multicultural Orthodox atmosphere, where people seeking to hear the Liturgical services conducted in the English  language find their sanctuary.

FR. VESELIN SVORCAN

Fr. Veselin Svorcan was born overseas in a small town called Mostar, located in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  In 1993, as a young adult he migrated to Melbourne, Australia.

From an early age, Fr. Veselin felt he had a spiritual calling and a strong yearning to Holy priesthood.  In his earlier years he undertook studies in Health Sciences (Sociology, Psychology, Drug and Alcohol counselling).   After the completion of his Bachelor Degree, Fr. Veselin continued to work with disadvantaged people as a social counselor.   As a mature adult God revealed a path to priesthood.  With faith and the blessings from Bishop Irinej Dobrijevic, Fr. Veselin embarked on studying Theology at St. Andrews College.

In 2012 on the feast of Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos, His Grace Bishop Irinej Dobrijevic of Australia and New Zealand, ordained Fr. Veselin to Holy Diaconate and the following year to the Holy Priesthood.

Following his ordination Fr. Veselin served and assisted in a number of parishes in Melbourne, until 2015 when he was appointed as the Parish priest at Holy Archangel Michael Homebush, prompting his relocation to Sydney.

“Holy Archangel Michael’s is a unique and a truly community based parish, bringing together a dedicated group of people, from diverse backgrounds, young and old, from all over Sydney.  Our parishioners have one fundamental bond in common and that is a desire to know and worship our Lord, whilst striving to live an Orthodox way of life according to His commandments.  God Bless."
